Instruction For Writing Dissertation Literature Review


Both undergraduate and graduate students are subject to writing what's known as a literature review as a part of their coursework.

A literature review is a type of paper that reviews important points of current information about a specific topic. Literature reviews typically include various substantive findings, in addition to other methodological and theoretical findings that eventually contribute to fleshing out overall subject.

The main goal of a literature review is helping inform the reader of current literature about a specific topic. The review also presents the information in a way that sets up the basis for exploring another goal, such as future research that may need to be conducted to gain more information about that specific subject. Literature reviews are generally unbiased and don't actually report much new information about a specific subject.

Writing a dissertation literature review


Literature reviews are also used as a part of a dissertation or thesis. Because of this, they're usually used to explore certain aspects about a specific subject in a dissertation before it segues into sections that explore new information about that particular subject.

Due to the nature of dissertation literature reviews, a lot of students have difficulty writing them for their coursework. Though, dissertation literature reviews are simple to write if students have a plan for managing the researching and eventual writing process.

  1. Figure out your area of research.
    Students can't properly commit to writing a dissertation literature review without knowing what they're researching about. That's why it's important for students to search for the topic they plan to write about before starting to research. They should also stick to getting books, articles and other resources that only pertain to the subject they're writing about.
  2. Gather research materials.
    Students can gather materials from a wide variety of places. They can search for various books and articles in their area or search online for digital versions of those same materials. Students should also set an appropriate time to find their research materials; this helps prevent them from spending too much time finding research materials.
  3. Find the appropriate information and analyze.
    The information that students find will be in its 'unadulterated' form, so it's up to students to take that information and present it in their own words.

They can do this by looking through their research materials for information that's relevant to their dissertation literature review. When they do find information, they should take notes of that information (with citations). It's also recommended to make a (digital) document of that information, directly typing the research text into the document for later reference.

Students can take their reference excerpts and use it in their dissertation literature review. They can use that information by applying their own analysis to that information, essentially forming the basis for their dissertation literature review.
